Restorative justice diversion is a way to address harm in criminal justice cases, and has increasingly been used in situations involving young people. The model fosters healing among the person who caused harm, the person who experienced harm, and the broader community. Restorative justice diversion prioritizes accountability, and has demonstrated that it results in widespread satisfaction among survivors of crimes who have participated in it. Nonetheless, the model is not widely used in cases involving serious violent crimes.
A new documentary series, JUSTICE, USA, offers a glimpse into one such case in Nashville, TN, and the healing experienced by all those who participated in the restorative justice process. During this virtual event, we will screen a portion of the documentary and hear from a panel of presenters who were involved in the case and the development of the series, and who continue to champion this model for youth and their communities in Nashville and beyond.
